Based on the directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, to treat the Saudi twins, Reem and Rana from the Al Baha region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the medical team at KAMC headed by HE Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Minister of Health held several meetings to discuss the clinical condition and separation of the twins. After careful review with the team it was agreed that the twins are separable.
Dr. Rabeeah stated that the twins undergone all the necessary tests and reached the target weight to perform the separation. The twins are joined at the lower abdomen, pelvis and share a fused genito-urinary system with one anal canal.
Dr. Rabeeah advised that the medical team had decided to perform the surgery on Thursday, 13 September 2012 at King Abdulaziz Medical City and was anticipated to take approximately 13 hours over 11 phases. The surgical team comprises 28 members and covers anesthesia, pediatric, urology, orthopedics, plastics and nursing.
HE Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah and HE Dr. Bandar Al Knawy thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz for his generosity and humanitarian actions and that has changed so many lives.
