Updated Report On Omani Conjoined Twins
Four days after the successful separation of the Omani conjoined twins, Safa and Marwa both twins are now completely stable without any complications.  Both twins are breathing normally and all vital organs are stable including their heart, lungs and nervous system.  Their movements and interaction to their surroundings is normal. The Medical team have confirmed that both twins woke-up one day after their operation and have improved dramatically.

Presently they are playing with their parents and started to take their feed using a tube inserted through their nose to their stomach.  The Medical Team expect the twins to be discharged from the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit next week.

The twins arrived on 22 December 2006, by the humanitarian gesture of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and a Multidisciplinary team was created.  Many special investigations were undertaken and after several meetings the team
agreed to proceed with the separation with a success rate of 60%.  To prepare for the operation special balloons were put under the skin of the head to stretch the head and increase the surface area over the last few months to enable the team to cover the head after separation.

Based on the directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin  Abdulaziz Al Saud the conjoined twins attached at the head (craniopagus) were successfully separated at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh on Saturday, 27 October 2007 in an operation
lasting 18 hours.  The operation was carried out in 7 phases by 22 members from specialties in Neuro Surgery, Anesthesia, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Nursing and technicians.  The Multidisciplinary team included 60 members.
